From a Correspondent in Angola
The 5th Ordinary Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) starts this Morning in Luanda, Angola with Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Bernard K. Membe is representing President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete in the summit.
The summit which is aimed at deliberating on the regional peace and Security especially in the unfolding state of insecurity in DRC after the defeat of M23 and escalating fighting in South Sudan and Central Republic.
More than 12 heads of state and Government from countries party to the International Conference on Great Lakes region have so far arrived in Luanda ready for the today’s summit.
Hon. Membe arrived in Angola on Monday, 13 January 2014 and led Tanzania’s delegation to the Regional Inter-ministerial Committee (RIMC) yesterday (Tuesday 14 January 2013).
The Summit is expected to be attended by Regional leaders from 12 Member states of ICGLR plus South Africa which has been invited on account of the role it plays in the regional security.

The Summit is also expected to
be attended by the UN Secretary Generals Special Envoy to the Great
Lakes Region, Ms Mary Robinson and representatives of other regional
organizations including the friends of ICGLR.
The Summit will deliberate on
the political and security situation in the Member States, particularly,
DRC, South Sudan and the Central African Republic.
DRC had so far done a sterling
job in dislodging the M23 rebels who had destabilised the country for
quite some time with support from other troops from Tanzania, South
Africa and Malawi.
